Introduction
Coco is the bright and optimistic protagonist of Witch Hat Atelier. A tailor's daughter fascinated by magic, her life changes when a chance encounter reveals that magic is not an innate gift, but an art of drawing sigils. After accidentally turning her mother to crystal with forbidden magic, she becomes a witch's apprentice to undo the curse.
Coco's fascination with magic begins after witnessing a witch's display. She later discovers a forbidden magical picture book (sold to her by a mysterious masked group known as the Brimmed Caps) and innocently copies the symbols.
Appearance
She is easily recognized by her tousled, golden-green hair and golden eyes. As an apprentice, she wears a pointed white hat with blue accents, a vibrant blue vest, and a long light-colored robe.
Her look evolves slightly as she learns magic.
Personality
Coco is a bright, optimistic, and deeply curious young girl. As an "outsider" who discovers that magic is drawn rather than an innate birthright, she approaches spells with wide-eyed wonder and practical, out-of-the-box creativity.
Instead of relying on traditional, complex witch methods, her non-magical background allows her to solve problems creatively. She frequently brainstorms simple, practical solutions that help her peers.
Relations
Quifrey: Qifrey and Coco have a complex master-apprentice relationship that blends deep mentorship, familial love, and manipulation.
Aggot: After witnessing Coco's determination and willingness to endure hardship to fix her mistakes, Agott's harshness softens. They bond through several life-threatening trials, and Agott begins to view Coco as an equal.
Tetia: Tetia and Coco share a warm, supportive mentorship. As fellow apprentices under Qifrey, Tetia is the first to welcome Coco and quickly steps into the role of a kind senior, guiding Coco through her magic and becoming one of her dearest friends.
Richeh: Richeh and Coco are fellow apprentices under the mentorship of Qifrey. Initially, Richeh struggles to understand Coco's naive, wide-eyed fascination with magic. However, they bond over shared experiences, with Coco's creativity and originality helping Richeh open up and overcome her creative insecurities.
Coco's Mother: Coco was raised solely by her mother after her father's death. Because of this early loss, her mother developed a deep fear of being left alone, frequently worrying that Coco's big imagination and love for magic would cause her to leave their tailoring shop.
Trivia
When Shirahama initially conceived the idea for Witch Hat Atelier, she began by designing Coco to anchor the story's theme โ exploring the wonder of drawing as a form of magic.
